Call for Applicants: Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Aerosol Medicine and Pulmonary Drug Delivery

Our Editor-in-Chief Gerald C. Smaldone, MD, PhD, Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Division, School of Medicine, State University of New York at Stony Brook, has done an outstanding job as Founding Editor of Journal of Aerosol Medicine and Pulmonary Drug Delivery for over 30 years. Dr. Smaldone has announced his desire to retire from the journal at the end of 2021 or early 2022, having provided outstanding service to the Journal, the International Society of Aerosols in Medicine, and the field at large. During the onboarding of a new Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Smaldone will remain active to ensure a smooth transition. On behalf of the Society for Aerosol Medicine, we would like to thank Gerry for his efforts and tremendous dedication as Editor of the Journal of Aerosol Medicine and ex officio member of the ISAM Board.

The Journal of Aerosol Medicine and Pulmonary Drug Delivery

The Journal of Aerosol Medicine and Pulmonary Drug Delivery is the official Journal of the ISAM society. Our Journal is published by the leading publisher in the biomedical and biotechnology industries, Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., has an exceptional opportunity for an ambitious academic or industry scientist to play a pivotal role as Editor-in-Chief in driving the continued success of Journal of Aerosol Medicine and Pulmonary Drug Delivery, the only peer-reviewed journal delivering innovative, authoritative coverage of the health effects of inhaled aerosols and delivery of drugs through the pulmonary system.

The journal is a forum for leading experts, addressing novel topics such as aerosolized chemotherapy, aerosolized vaccines, methods to determine toxicities, and delivery of aerosolized drugs in the intubated patient. The audience includes respiratory specialists, pulmonary specialists, internal medicine specialists, pharmaceutical researchers, and equipment manufacturers, among others.

The EIC will will serve as as an ex officio member of the board of the International Society for Aerosols in Medicine as stated in our statutes.

The new EIC role will begin in late 2021 with a multi-year appointment.

Position Expectations - Editor-in-Chief (EIC)

The role of the EIC is to provide editorial oversight and strategy, to recruit and attract submissions to the journal, and to ensure the timeliness of publication of all journal content. One of the main priorities of the EIC is to solicit original research and review articles on key topics, and to be a fundamental advocate for the journal. The EIC will establish the working management of the journal, including appointing Associate Editors to manage manuscript submissions and editorial board members. Journal of Aerosol Medicine and Pulmonary Drug Delivery is a subscription journal that offers authors open access publishing options.

The EIC is responsible for communicating with authors and reviewers, as needed, regarding substantive manuscript content and review queries, and will ensure all standards for scientific publishing, including publication ethics, are adhered to, maintained, and implemented.

Requirements

  • Highly organized, motivated individual with the skills and talent to continue to develop a highly regarded journal in an aggressive marketplace
  • Broad research interests and a record of successful publication
  • Editorial and peer review experience in biomedical or biotechnology journals Publishing experience as an author; reviewing and/or editorial board member experience highly desirable
  • Experience with online manuscript submission systems is a plus; willingness to learn and use ScholarOne Manuscript Central system
  • Strong network and reputation nationally and internationally
  • Solid knowledge of industry activities and contacts in the field
  • Advocacy for open access publishing and social media
  • This is an independent-contractor position (with honorarium)
